Victor Osimhen’s accomplishment as the highest-scoring Nigerian in the Italian top division has been acknowledged by Napoli.
After scoring in Napoli’s tense 2-1 away victory at Atalanta last weekend, Osimhen surpassed Simy Nwankwo’s previous record of 31 goals.
With 32 goals, the 23-year-old currently holds the record.
Given the variety of Nigerian strikers that have previously competed in Serie A, it’s an impressive accomplishment.
Former Italian first-flight players include Obafemi Martins, Stephen Makinwa, and Obinna Nsofor.
Napoli celebrated their goal on social media.
“@victorosimhen9’s goal against Atalanta at the weekend saw him become the top-scoring Nigerian in @SerieA_EN of all time! ForzaNapoliSempre, ” the Serie A leaders tweeted.
If Osimhen scores again against Empoli today, he would tie Arkadiusz Milik’s record for most goals in a single season in Serie A.
Milik was the last Napoli player to score goals in five straight games.
