After suffering an injury during training, RB Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku will miss the 2022 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar in a few days.

During Tuesday’s practice, Nkunku, who was exercising with his French teammates, twisted his leg awkwardly when challenging Eduardo Camavinga for the ball. He instantly indicated that he was in discomfort and left the training field to get treated.

Shortly after, France stated that his injury would preclude him from competing in the competition.

The French national team issued the following statement:

“Due to a training injury, Christopher Nkunku must withdraw from the World Cup.” The entire gang sympathizes with Christopher and wishes him a speedy recovery.”

The incident is a big setback for Les Bleus, who were already without Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, and Presnel Kimpembe in Qatar. Nkunku has also been in excellent form with Leipzig this season, netting 12 goals in 15 Bundesliga outings.

France has the option of calling up a replacement for Nkunku before their first match against Australia on November 22. Randal Kolo Muani of Eintracht Frankfurt is said to be the favorite to replace the RB Leipzig star.
